Horizon Europe – consortium looks for partners providing retrofit solutions to reduce exhaust emissions of internal combustion engines as well as to reduce exhaust and brake noise

A large German company active in the field of filtration systems looks for partners for a project proposal under the call - HORIZON-CL5-2021-D5-01. Aim is to assess and improve air quality at bus and metro stations by reducing exhaust, brake and noise emissions. The company searches for partners providing retrofitting solutions for the reduction of exhaust emissions of conventional engines especially for buses and/or solutions for the reduction of exhaust and brake noise.


A large German company with many decades of experience in filtration is planning to submit a proposal under the call - HORIZON-CL5-2021-D5-01 - Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes; call title/topic - HORIZON-CL5-2021-D5-01-15 - Development and demonstration of cost affordable and adaptable retrofit solutions for tailpipe and brake polluting emissions

The planned project aims to address this call with a demand-driven innovation action that has the following main objective:
Provide public transport organisations with affordable, easy to install retrofit solutions to reduce 90% of fine particle emission in semi-open and closed areas like train, bus and metro stations.

One part of the project will tackle the problem of pollution in form of brake particles, as brakes of road and rail vehicles are a major source of the emission of large quantities of fine particles, including heavy metals and resins. This task will be carried out by the co-ordinator of the project.

However, to meet the aim of the project a partner is still required who can provide cost-effective and adaptable retrofit solutions that can reduce exhaust emissions of buses with conventional internal combustion engines in terms of NOx and particles. In fact, the solutions should address emissions of nanoparticles from indirect injection (i.e. conventional) gasoline and natural gas engines or Pre-Euro 6 c direct injection gasoline cars.

Finally, the retrofitted vehicles should not only feature reduced exhaust and brake emissions but they should also show a reduction of noise and a partner who can offer/integrate such a solution for noise reduction would also be of interest to the consortium.

So far, the consortium consists of several partners covering e.g. the tasks of reduction of brake particles, exposure measurement and modelling, toxicological effects measurements for exposure control.
