Sensitive and non intrusive gas detection finds an increasing number of applications from biomedical diagnosis to atmospheric sensing via agrifood quality
A French University technology transfer company is looking for R&D performing SMEs to conduct a Eurostars project under a research cooperation agreement to develop real-time monitoring or molecules detection devices using a new optical molecular spectroscopy technology.

A French academic laboratory has developed a new technology for optical molecular spectroscopy used in molecule detection through gas sensing, combining advanced concepts of optical telecommunications and supercontinuum photonics for the generation of so-called “dual-combs”.

Frequency agile lasers have brought real technology advances for fast spectral measurements through frequency “combs” originating from pulses emitted by ultrafast lasers.

Laser frequency combs open up new opportunities for precise multiplex and multichannel spectroscopy with resolved individual comb lines. However, current techniques have several drawbacks. Serial time-encoded spectroscopy have a limited precision while dual-comb spectroscopy have a reduced dynamic range. This is the reason why these techniques have very limited commercial or industrial applications so far.

The present research has allowed to eliminate these drawbacks with the introduction of two mutually coherent frequency-agile frequency combs. Indeed two frequency combs of slightly different repetition frequencies are generated by a frequency-agile laser diode. The two pulse train are amplified and they are launched for spectral broadening into a non linear optical fiber of high normal dispersion.

This technology provides a real breakthrough allowing a very fast spectrum acquisition (within a few microseconds to a few milliseconds), with high resolution and sensitivity. Several molecules can be detected simultaneously. The immediate application is the real-time detection of molecules which paves the way for the development of a new generation of diagnostic devices for physical, chemical, medical, biological as well as industrial applications.

The technology transfer company of this French university lab has patented the technology and is now aiming at developing industrial applications with companies. It is already working with a German research institute which has developed a complementary technology as well as with a French company in the field of photonics.

Together they are willing to set up a collaborative research & development project under the Eurostars programme involving SMEs in order to develop devices using this technology for real-time monitoring applications.

Among the range of applications :
- Healthcare : diagnostic of diseases through a real-time analysis of breath
- Agri-food : diagnostic of quality or maturity of plants
- Environment : diagnostic of exhaust gas from vehicles

They are now looking for one or two R&D performing SMEs active in these industrial sectors and developing gas sensors or detectors, one of them agreeing to take the lead of the project as coordinator.

Advantages and Innovations

-	Fast real-time measurements
- Increased accuracy through the ability to simultaneously measure multiple components with a single device
- Increased discrimination: distinguishes molecular constituents with close signatures
