Summary

A Belgian SME has developed an innovative vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). Scientifically monitored wind tunnel tests with a scale size model have proven it’s highly efficient compared to existing VAWTs, due to its low start-up wind speed, specific design and increased power output. The company is looking for manufacturers interested in finalising the product and commercialising it. It is offering a granted EP patent (and more applications) on a VAWT and the corresponding knowhow.

Description

The company offering the technology is located in Eastern Flanders, Belgium. As horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) aren’t suitable in all locations and/or environments, the inventors developed an alternative for these HAWTs. 
Starting from an existing Savonius type VAWT, the inventors optimised the performance and integrated two gearwheels augmenting the rotational speed for the generator. Another increase of efficiency was reached by two wind deflecting accelerators due to the directing of the airflow.
Model tests in the windtunnel, monitored by a Belgian university, showed that this VAWT has an excellent performance.
Estimates of different dimensions and average performances for extrapolated test values:
-Rotor of 6m X 3.6 m: 9.738 kWh/Year
-Rotor of 8m X 4.8 m: 17.141 kWh/Year
-Rotor of 10m X 6 m: 27.138 kWh/Year

Advantages and Innovations

The main advantages of the innovative design of the vertical axis wind turbine are:
- Low start-up wind speed: tests with a scale model in a wind tunnel, starting from 3m/s the turbine already produces energy
- The development was scientifically monitored
- High torque
- Due to the use of accelerators, power output is increased by 250%
- Estimated annual power production year of a full size model (8 meter high per a diameter of 4.8 meter) which could vary between 16.223 and 18.650 kWh, depending on the location.

Stage Of Development Comment

There is a scale size VAWT model designed to do the tests in an indoor windtunnel. Although not constructed for outdoor use, this test vawt is located on a 4m high rooftop in Belgium and performs very well.

Requested partner

The company is looking for industrial partners with manufacturing possibilities, interested in upscaling and commercializing the VAWT technology. Interested companies should have knowledge of composite materials and be able to do the installing, maintenance and after-sales service of the VAWT’s.
In first instance the company is looking for a partner interested in buying the patent and knowhow but also a licensing agreement is negotiable. The company is looking for interested partners, in Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Ireland as the patent is granted for these countries.
