Country of Origin: Bulgaria
Reference Number: TOBG20180911001
Publication Date: 11 September 2018

Summary

A Bulgarian inventor with experience in applied R&D has developed an innovative device for prevention and treatment of spinal deformity. It is applicable in the field of biomedical engineering, sports, assistive technology for people with disabilities, education and training. The inventor is looking for research cooperation agreements with companies and R&D institutions for further development and testing of new applications and also manufacturing agreements with companies.

Description

The Bulgarian inventor with over ten years of experience in applied R&D has developed an innovative trainer biofeedback device for prevention and treatment of spinal deformity applicable in the field of biomedical engineering, sports, assistive technology for people with disabilities, education and training.

Spinal deformities are an increasingly growing problem, especially among young people which lead to serious health risk and reduced quality of life.

The existing solutions do not have clear methodology for prevention and treatment of spinal deformations and are complicated for use. Additionally, some of the known devices are not advisable to be used in case of scoliosis and kyphoscoliosis.
The main purpose of the innovative device is to train users to create a dynamic stereotype of correct body posture and prevent asymmetric mechanical load on the body both in the sagittal and frontal planes by strengthening the body muscles (paravertebral and ventral).

The device is attached by a shoulder strap on the back. Its regulation is individual for each person. The innovation signalises with a vibration signal when the spine is inclined forward or sideward. Moreover, the device has a timer which starts to send a vibration signal in order to alert the patient when she / he has an incorrect body position for more than 10 sec. The device has undergone all medical tests and has shown positive effect on the treatment of functional scoliosis and postural kyphosis.

The Bulgarian inventor is looking for research cooperation agreements with: companies operating in the sectors of biomedical engineering and product development, assitive medical technologies, quality of life and related fields; R& D institutions for further development and testing of new applications, as well as, joint projects; manufacturing agreements with companies.

Advantages and Innovations

The device is innovative and has unique characteristics. In comparison to existing solutions:
- it is free of any noxious chemical elements such as mercury or other compounds elements which hazardous to the human health.
- the device and the methodology are adapted for children and young people with special health needs.
In addition:
- it can be built with a considerably reduced number of components which contributes to the higher level of reliability of the device and its lower cost;
- it is not necessary to have any knowledge in the IT area in order to use it;
- the device allows control (biofeedback) in the sagittal and frontal planes of the spine, which can prevent the following defects: a) Incorrect body position, as well as other improper postures which are corrected as a result of the consumer’s desire to avoid the biofeedback signalization; b) Development of compensatory movements (discoordination of movements) and creation of a vicious locomotive habit which are prevented as a result of the consumer’s desire to avoid or reduce a particular movement in order to avoid biofeedback signalisation.
