New hi-tech device for breast cancer screening.

Summary

A Bulgarian SME with great experience in the design and fabrication of novel high-frequency electronic systems, systems with embedded control, and microwave-based sensors has developed an innovative device for breast cancer screening. The working principle is based on the detection of thermal electromagnetic emissions from the tumor.  It can be used for screening in areas with difficult access to medical facilities. Technical agreements and research cooperation agreements are sought.

Description

The company has great experience in the R&D of innovative products and systems, including hardware, firmware and software, in the field of microwave and sensor technology and wireless communication. It also has long-term experience in successful international projects.

Breast cancer is perceived as the most dangerous oncological disease for women, as it has the highest mortality and incidence rate. The World Health Organisation recommends screening as the most effective procedure for increasing the success rate of the treatment as it allows early detection. The currently available screening methods are mammography, which is an X-ray image of the breast tissue, ultrasonic exam, and manual exam. The mammography requires expensive and bulky apparatus, and emits ionising radiation, which is potentially harmful, especially for people prone to cancer development. The other two methods do not show sufficient precision.

The Bulgarian company has developed a portable passive breast cancer screening sensor which operates by detecting the thermal electromagnetic emissions from the cancerous tissue. It can be used in remote areas where there is difficult access to medical equipment. The sensor can be connected to a mobile device which further reduces costs and makes it easier to use. The sensor emits no radiation and is therefore completely harmless both for the patients and for the medical staff. It is easy to use which makes it suitable for implementation by general practitioners.

The SME seeks technical cooperation agreements with companies and research units for medical testing of the device which will give a full description of the medical characteristics and speed up different processes, adapting it to the potential needs; research cooperation agreements with research partners and industrial partners for joint project development in the field of medical technology and medical equipment; cancer early screening and prevention, quality of life and safety.
