Summary

A Czech university hospital has developed a special device that enables more effective special care for patients confined to bed. The device can be attached to a bed where a long-term care for patient is performed, such as hospices, senior houses, health resorts or homes. It enables dynamic positioning, basal stimulation, transfers on the bed or out of the bed, physical therapy and self-exercising. University seeks manufacturers of medical devices for a licensing agreement.

Description

Specialists from the Czech university hospital experienced in long-term care have developed special device for training, positioning and lifting of patients confined to bed that can be easily attached to most of the beds. 

The novel approach embodied in the device can notably improve physical and psychical status of a patient. And, for service providing person this simply installable invention allows much easier manipulation with person on care.

The device offers a wide range of applications in the care for patients having any type of functional disorder or being bedridden:

- Dynamic positioning on the back, on the side, on the abdomen or while sitting (including sitting with legs over the edge of the bed)
- Lifting the patient or part of a body above the bed (e.g. as a part of basal stimulation or relaxation, when changing bedclothes, during exercises).
- Gentle traction or compression of limbs and spine to reduce pain or muscle tension.
- Effective active or passive training in various positions with suspension bands or flexible cables (enabling for example movement of the legs like while riding a bicycle)

The device consists of a supporting structure, which comprises at least two beams, wherein each beam is provided with a set of openings for attaching suspension bands, and the beams are arranged horizontally in the supporting structure and mutually spaced apart. The supporting structure further comprises at least two vertical bars and at least two crossbars, wherein the beams are mutually parallel and are connected to the vertical bars directly or through the crossbars. According to a preferred embodiment, the beams are interconnected by crossbars. According to a particularly preferred embodiment, the device further comprises a pad made of flexible material which is along its edges provided with eyelets and a set of suspension bands in the form of bands, ropes, belts or cables, each with a set of loops, wherein the suspension bands are detachably attachable by their loops to the beams and to the eyelets of the pad. Preferably, the set of suspension bands comprises non-elastic suspension bands and elastic suspension bands. It is also advantageous when the device further comprises at least one other pad with a set of eyelets provided along its edges, wherein the shapes of the pads differ from the top view. The supporting structure may further comprise stabilization bases, which are attached to the lower ends of the vertical bars. According to another particularly preferred embodiment, the supporting structure comprises four vertical bars, two on each side of the supporting structure, and further crossbars, each of which connecting a neighboring pair of vertical bars. It may be advantageous in some cases when the supporting structure of the training, positioning and lifting device comprises at least two vertical bars, which are attached or attachable to the bed. The pad made of flexible material is provided with eyelets along its edges. The pad can be made of textile material or additionally can be coated with softened PVC. The suspension bands are provided at its ends and along its length with loops. The device comprises connection means, such as snap-hooks, by means of which the loops of the bands are connectable to the openings in beams and to the eyelets of the pad. Alternatively the supporting structure or a part of it can be a part of a bed.

Advantages and Innovations

The device can represent additional value for hospital-bed producers. The device is preferably used with any vertically adjustable bed. Advantages of the devices include: 
- Physical burden reduction of health workers during manipulation with the patient
- Positioning enables the patient movement (dynamic positioning)
- Gentle extension or compression can be applied during positioning to reduce pain or muscle tension
- Physical training can be performed with precise load adjustment and also with the gravity exclusion
- Secured position and correct setting of the joints during all activities
- Many use options in one device, benefits for both acute care and aftercare, usage for patients in different health conditions
- Simple construction, easy to operate, easy to disinfect and low cost.
