H2020-LC-SC3-2018-2019-2020: Spanish-Canadian consortium is looking for a Southern Europe partner related to the energy sector to carry out dissemination and communication activities on advanced biofuels and bioenergy project.

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: RDES20200707001
Publication Date: 7 July 2020

Summary

A Spanish-Canadian consortium is preparing a project proposal to be submitted to the H2020 International cooperation with Canada on advanced biofuels and bioenergy call (H2020-LC-SC3-2018-2019-2020). The project will focus on the efficient production of syngas and bio-oil from solid biomass. The consortium is looking for a Southern Europe partner in the energy sector to be in charge of the project management, communication and dissemination activities.

Description

A Spanish-Canadian consortium working in the energy sector, specifically advanced biofuels and bioenergy, is preparing a project proposal to be submitted to a H2020 Building a low-carbon, climate resilient future: secure, clean and efficient energy call (H2020-LC-SC3-2018-2019-2020).

The proposal aims at filling in the technological gaps for the efficient production of syngas and bio-oil from solid biomass. Gathering together European and Canadian experts in the fields of biomass thermochemical conversion and processing, techno-economic and life cycle analysis, the consortium will cooperate to enhance the conversion of biomass to both syngas and bio-oil with suitable quality for further biofuel production, by promoting the efficiency and the reduction of the environmental impact of any of the steps involved. Two case studies, Canada and Southern Europe will be analyzed to finally identify the winning pathway technology for each case in terms of the techno-economic and life cycle analysis.

Previous R&D projects have explored the conversion of biomass by either gasification or pyrolysis; this proposal looks for an integrated approach where the analysis of both conversion technologies under two different scenarios gives a more complete picture for implementation and decision-making.

The consortium is looking for a Southern Europe SME or institution related to energy sector. The partner sought, with expertise in European projects management, will be in charge of the project management, communication and dissemination activities of the project and its results, organization of workshops, events, etc., emphasizing how the pathway technology selected for each case study will impact in terms of the techno-economic and life cycle analysis.

EOI deadline: 6 August, 2020.
Call deadline: 1st September, 2020.
Anticipated duration of the project: three years

Advantages and Innovations

Bioenergy’s contribution to the EU’s 2030 renewable objectives and to the European Green Deal is crucial, in the future, even with the further development of electric vehicles, there will continue to be a great need for liquid fuels in heavy transportation and aviation, and bio-oils are ideally suited to fill this market.

This project is expected to bring the technology from TRL 3 to TRL 5, therefore the SMEs involved in the project will exploit the developed technology and can gain access to develop, test, and adopt intermediate bioenergy carriers, cost-effectively and sustainably, that could be processed for further advanced biofuel generation. Therefore, an innovation ecosystem will be created and access to unique facilities and knowledge without high capital investment.
