RFCS 2018 - Advanced solid state hydrogen sensor

Country of Origin: Italy
Reference Number: RDIT20180111001
Publication Date: 11 January 2018

Summary

An Italian research laboratory is able to provide several services for analysis, tests and measurements on materials and components. The project aims to implement a standard system to analyse and study the limits of application of different advanced high strength steels by determining the risk of hydrogen embrittlement (HE). The final goal is to create a standard procedure to analyse and test the hydrogen embrittlement in steel. The company is offering cooperation in EU projects such as RFCS.

Description

R&D project will implement novel techniques for hydrogen detection. Usually the hydrogen electrochemical detection needs electrodes, liquid solution and a metallic surface to close the cell circuit.

The technique is optimized in order to be able to measure the hydrogen content in selected steels. The hydrogen detection is based on a solid metal oxide sensor technology with an operative principle.

The developed technique is a clear procedure to distinguish the corrosion cracking by other corrosive failure coming from hydrogen embrittlement from those caused by stress corrosion cracking by other corrosive elements or possible corrosion fatigue.

The RFCS programme (Research Fund for Coal and Steel) provides for a bottom-up approach thus leaving applicants free to submit a project of any size in any relevant area. The proposal should relate to the production and/or processing of steel or its properties, manufacture and/or utilization of steel product.

RFCS next call will be published in June 2018 and the deadline is going to be in September 2018. Usually the R&D project has a duration of 36-42 months.

The partner searched for cooperation are companies with interest in the application and implementation of this method, like steels industries, automotive.

Advantages and Innovations

The method of analysis provides reliable information about possible risks of low hydrogen activities over longer times. Steel industries, automotive sectors as well as related industries, EU institution can have great advantages from the implementation of the R&D projects, for different reasons:
- create standard method of analysis
- create shared EU guidelines
