Innovation & Technology Offer

Technology for gentle drying of biologically active and thermolabile materials offered

Country of Origin: Czech Republic
Reference Number: TOCZ20170810001
Publication Date: 14 August 2017

Summary

A Czech start-up company specialised in food technology, particularly in the field of drying and homogenization developed state-of-the-art technology for gentle drying of various materials (biologically active, food, pharmaceutical, chemical, organic and inorganic). The advantages are lower drying temperatures and less energy consumption. The SME is looking industrial partners from the food, cosmetic or pharma industry for commercial agrement with technical assistence or technical cooperation.

Description

The Czech SME has developed state-of-the-art technology for gentle drying of various materials (biologically active, food, pharmaceutical, chemical, organic and inorganic). Principle of technology lies in the combination of micro / nanoparticle production by centrifugal micro / nanomaterial technology with technologies using supercritical CO2.

So-called spray nebulization drying technology (CASND) allows materials to be produced in native state with maximum conservation of biological activities or other original material properties. This allows utilization of low drying temperatures and reaching new characteristic of micronized materials.
In comparison with machines produced by the competitors, the technology consumes less energy compared to freeze drying and conventional spray drying and can be utilized in the food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industries.

In the case of commercial agreement with technical assistance the SME will provide customized turn-key solution within the specific customer’s environment including the staff training and service.

Further development based on a technical cooperation agreement to adapt the technology for drying specific materials than mentioned above based e.g. on a European research project (Horizon2020, Eureka etc.) is another cooperation option.

Advantages and Innovations

- Smaller particle sizes than e.g. spray drying (higher and faster solubility or dispersibility)
- Potentially new characteristic of micronized materials (e.g. micronized proteins have improved functional properties such as foaming and emulsifying activity)
- Drying takes place continuously and with less energy consumption compared to freeze drying and conventional spray drying
- The technology is modular, applicable to different types of industries
- Low drying temperatures (25 - 65 °C) allow for gentle and cost-effective processing of thermolabile materials

Stage Of Development

Field tested/evaluated

Stage Of Development Comment

The technology has been field tested, its Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is 7.

Requested partner

The Czech SME seeks:
- companies from the food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry
- partners, who deliver similar technologies to the above mentioned areas of industry
- companies that supply relevant materials / products for these segments

The Czech company can provide customized solution within the specific environment and customer’s internal production processes. The cooperation sought may vary according to the client’s needs:

- The SME will provide customized turn-key solution within the specific customer’s environment including the staff training based on commercial agreement with technical assistance

- Technical cooperation agreement in order to adapt the technology for other industries than those mentioned above based e.g. on a European research project (Horizon2020, Eureka etc.) is another cooperation option as well.
