Measuring instrument for the determination of the effects of cavitation

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20170406004
Publication Date: 6 April 2017

Summary

A German research institute developed a method for the determination of the effects of cavitation. Ultrasonic cleaning devices are increasingly used in the most varied tasks in the industrial and service sector, but yet there is no generally accepted method or standard which allows a quantitative description of the cleaning effect. The offered technology offers a possible solution here. The research Institute is looking for licensees.

Description

A German research institute developed a method for the determination of the effects of cavitation. Ultrasonic cleaning devices are increasingly used in the most varied tasks in the industrial production and in service sector, e.g. in the cleaning of castings or injection needles as well as surgical equipment. Simple small devices are also offered for household applications. Despite this widespread use, there is as yet no generally accepted method or standard which allows a quantitative description of the cleaning effect.
For the determination of the erosion effect, the mass removal on an oscillating quartz is directly determined by shifting the resonant frequency. A defined contamination is applied on the quartz plate, which is removed again in the cleaning bath. The removal of the material is a cleaning operation by itself which is measured directly thereby.

A decisive part of the German research institute's know-how is the use of suitable layers which simulate the contamination. On the one hand, they should not be detached on their own, on the other hand they should also be able to be removed in useful time units in the bath. Various material systems are available to the selection.
Usage:
The method which directly outputs the mass removal as a measurement parameter, has the decisive advantage of the clear and fast measurement data acquisition. Very small mass changes of modern, "gentle" ultrasound baths can also be determined.
Commercial relevance:
The system represents an obvious advance in the quality assurance of the operation of ultrasonic baths. In the field of industry, a test of the current ablation rate can be carried out during operation. In the area of particularly sensitive applications, such as medical technology, standardization reduces the risk of contamination.
Development status:
The method is disclosed in patent DE 10 2007 028 612 B4.
The research Institute is looking for licensees.
