Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20171010001
Publication Date: 10 October 2017
Summary
A German university invented a process to operate power grids with a new methodology for real time load identification and load-control that leads to grid optimization. The process is general and applicable to any power electronics devices able to influence the voltage or frequency in the grid. The university offers its results worldwide to companies or institutes active in the field of power electronics for a license agreement or a research cooperation agreement.
Description
Researchers of a German faculty of engineering active in the field of power electronics identified the behavior of electrical loads while operating through targeted feed-in of one or more interference signals using a power electronics device connected to the power grid. They also measured electrical characteristics of loads connected to the power grid and continually determined one load sensitivity on the basis of the measured electrical characteristics and the interference signals fed in. At least one of the operating parameters of the power grid was influenced on the basis of the load sensitivity determined. The result is a methodology that works in real time and does not need long history data or complex mathematical methods. Instead the invention provides more accurate control actions in regard of power grids.
The university is offering its methodology worldwide to companies active in the field of power electronics for a license agreement or a research cooperation agreement.
Advantages and Innovations
The proposed methodology works in real time and does not need long history data or complex mathematical methods. Furthermore it offers by the use of power electronics devices more accurate control actions based on real time identification of load response to voltage or frequency variation. Load consumption and generator production can be controlled by means of frequency and voltage variations based on the sensitivity found with the proposed methodology that can be repeated as deemed necessary (e.g. every 5 to 15 minutes). The high power variability of renewable energy can be followed by the use of this methodology.
The invention is generally valid for radial, ringed and mixed grid systems and offers ancillary services like frequency support in high voltage transmission grid, soft load reduction or generator ramp support, control of load consumption and generation production by means of sensitivity-based voltage or frequency variations.
