Energy storage with charger interface and second life batteries

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20210401002
Publication Date: 15 April 2021

Summary

A German company specialised in electric mobility, test bench technology and smart energy has developed an innovative energy storage system with charging interface and second life batteries. The system has multiple applications: intelligent grid usage, isolated operation, consumption optimisation, peak shaving and bidirectional charging. The company is looking for partnerships through a commercial agreement with technical assistance, a research and/or a technical cooperation agreement.

Description

The electrical grid of the future faces major challenges. Energy production is becoming more and more volatile as the number of flexible electricity consumers as well as the electrification of heat and mobility are increasing. Innovative storage solutions will thus become indispensable for various applications.

In 2020, the German company which specialises in electric mobility, test bench engineering and smart energy developed an innovative mobile energy storage with charger interface and second life lithium-ion automotive modules. The company provides thus an important contribution towards a sustainable energy future.

The energy storage is able to cover various application scenarios such as intelligent grid usage, isolated operation, consumption optimisation and peak shaving.

The SME provides potential partners with engineering and consulting, system adaptation to the partner’s specific application, customised installation and respective technical support under a commercial agreement with technical assistance.

To adapt its technology to different sectors, the SME is seeking international partners with a high level of expertise in one or more of the following areas: second-life batteries, energy storage and management, or grid operation. The objective is to be achieved through the exchange of know-how and the creation of new opportunities under a research or technical cooperation agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

Intelligent electrical grid usage:
By using the energy storage as buffer storage, even in places with low electric power supply, high electrical performance can be guaranteed. Operating fast charging stations, e.g. on highway rest areas or in rural areas, thus becomes possible. The basis is an intelligent energy management system.

Isolated operation:
During isolated operation - that means off-grid power supply - the energy storage represents a flexible possibility of supplying electricity as well as providing charging points for electric vehicles. Besides, an additional isolated operation the so-called cold start-up ability is possible. Connecting with a PV system allows to realise an independent system provided that the electrical power is sufficient.

Consumption optimization and peak shaving:
In case of volatile energy flows during energy production or short-term peak performance while high utilisation of the grid, the storage unit can be used as balancing element.

Bidirectional charging system:
By using a bidirectional charger interface the energy storage's capacity can be temporarily raised. Depending on the number of plugged in electric vehicles as well as their charge levels, grid-connected electrical consumers can be provided with an increased amount of energy. Furthermore, electric vehicles can be used as autonomous energy storages and thus can stabilise the electrical grid of the future. Consequently, electric vehicles become mobile energy storages which on the one hand draw energy from the charger interface and on the other hand are able to feed-in energy through the same charger interface. Bidirectional charging is available on request.
