Innovation & Technology Offer

Air purification based on novel heat exchanger and catalyst technology - compact, mobile devices for elimination of indoor pathogenic germs and industrial process emissions

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20210409001
Publication Date: 16 April 2021

Summary

A German SME offers a novel technology for pathogenic germ elimination as well as pollutants and Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) oxidation. It combines the advantages of heat exchanger (heat storage and recovery) and catalysis technology to compact, scalable and very energy-efficient air purification systems. The flexible and adaptable systems are applicable in crowded indoor places and at highly emitting industrial production sites. Company seeks commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Description

Harmful organic substances and pollutants in the waste and exhaust air of many industrial production processes, as well as pathogenic germs such as the current coronavirus in the ambient air, impose serious risks to human health and the environment, which need to be significantly reduced by respective measures. A range of methods and systems has been developed and implemented in recent years, but there is still a large potential for improvement in terms of performance, energy efficiency and flexibility.
A German company has developed a novel Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) oxidation technology that combines the advantages of heat exchanger (heat storage and recovery) and catalysis technology to compact, scalable and very energy-efficient air purification systems for the degradation of polluted air containing VOCs and other pollutants such as pathogenic germs.
Depending on the specific application (emissions in various industries, pathogens in public rooms e.g. hospitals, schools, waiting areas in medical practices, …) the systems can be adapted in size, scale, performance and capacity.
Customer-specific design of the catalyst and the components allows further optimisation and adaptation to the specific pollutants present in the particular (exhaust) air flow on-site.
These include:
• monomers, butadiene, plasticizers in the plastics production and processing
• methanol, ethanol, other solvents in cleaning, disinfection, paints, lacquers
• formaldehyde, adhesives, epoxides in furniture production, painting, adhesive bonding biochemical processes
• carbon monoxide, hydrogen in combustion, roasting, chemical processes
• benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes in polymer processing, oil refinery and natural gas processing
• pathogenic germs including corona and flu viruses in private or public indoor environments
Therefore, the flexible, modular scalable air purification systems are applicable to many public places as well as industrial sectors and processes:
• Plastics processes (Extrusion, injection moulding, granulation, plastics production, plastic refining, plastic processing)
• Printing processes (Additive manufacturing, packaging printing, printing of advertising material)
• Laser processes (Cutting, welding, sintering, additive manufacturing, lightweight construction, perforation, melting)
• Chemical and pharmaceutical processes (Manufacturing and dosing of active substances, oil refining and natural gas processing, synthesis methods, residual gases)
• Drying and sintering processes (Wood, ceramics, natural products, electronics)
• Manufacture of food (Frying, baking and roasting processes)
• Surface treatment (Cleaning, coating, disinfection, paintwork)
• Textile processing and packaging (Fabrics, paper, cardboard, foils)
• Hospitals, waiting rooms of medical practices, offices, public buildings, schools, …
Cooperation is sought with industrial companies in the above-mentioned sectors and with owners or operators of public buildings, schools, hospitals etc. on the basis of commercial agreements with technical assistance. The company provides preliminary engineering and consulting, system adaptation to the specific application, customised installation and respective technical support. On this basis various individualised types of bilateral agreements are negotiable.

Advantages and Innovations

Main facts:
• Safe and clean air for health through the use of individually tested HEPA H-14 particulate filters for maximum germ and particle reduction, including corona and flu viruses
• Increase in productivity and performance in rooms up to 100 m²
• economical operation with low life cycle costs
• sustainable through local supply chains and high-quality, robust quality made in Germany
Efficiency:
• Heat accumulator with heat recovery rate >97%
• Up to 90% energy savings
• Cost-saving alternative to avoid the burning of fossil fuels in exhaust air purification
Availability, space requirement & flexibility:
• Scalability by modular structure and coupling of standard systems
• Easy installation – Plug and Play
• Easy to integrate into existing systems
• Economic alternative to adsorption by an almost complete heat recovery
Legal requirements:
• Suitable for odour absorption and oxidation of trace gases
• Reduction of pollutant concentrations ≤ 12g/m3 below Clean Air Act & MAK limits possible
Environmental protection:
• significantly better energy and CO2 balance than other thermal systems on the market
• Lowest energy consumption despite high degradation rate
