Summary

A German university institute is active in the fields of mechanical engineering and production technologies. They discovered a novel process for the continuous grinding of rotationally symmetrical cutting tools, which can be applied in the production of cutting tools. In order to introduce the patented invention to the market, the institute is now looking for industrial partners, who are interested in a license- or commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Description

A German university institute, active in the fields of mechanical engineering and production technologies, developed a novel process for the continuous grinding of rotationally symmetrical cutting tools.

In the modern production of gear teeth, continuous generating grinding for the hard finishing of gears has become established due to its higher productivity compared to discontinuous profile grinding. In continuous generating grinding, a grinding worm with rack profile is used as the tool. The involute shape is produced by rolling the grinding worm and gear teeth. The novel process enables the transfer of the continuous generating grinding process to rotationally symmetrical cutting tools.

The process can be primarily used by manufacturers of cutting tools as well as by regrinding companies of rotationally symmetrical cutting tools. Such cutting tools are for example end mills, reamers, drilling tools, saw blades or side milling cutters. In addition, machine tool manufacturers can take up the method and offer it in combination with their existing technologies, e.g. during process design and the simulation of processes.

In order to commercialize the novel, patented process, the university institute is looking for suitable companies, willing to collaborate under a license or commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Advantages and Innovations

The main novelty of the innovation is the transfer of the continuous generating grinding process to rotationally symmetrical cutting tools. This process is disruptive and not yet applied in the industrial production. The invention is patented, proving the innovativeness of the suggested process.

One of the crucial benefits of the novel process is the reduction or elimination of several process steps regarding the multi-stage grinding processes in the production of cutting tools. Furthermore, the process enables higher productivity and thus cost advantages compared to the existing multi-stage grinding processes. Additionally, the process significantly increases the quality of the workpieces by the use of shift strategies.

Requested partner

In order to find suitable partners for the introduction of the novel, patented process into the industrial production of cutting tools, the university institute is looking for suitable manufacturing companies from the field of production technologies or material engineering. Possible partners could be manufacturers of cutting tools as well as regrinding companies of rotationally symmetrical cutting tools

The university institute considers a cooperation under a license- or commercial agreement with technical assistance.
