Extrusion system to develop new food and feed products

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20170616001
Publication Date: 21 June 2017

Summary

Agrofood division of Spanish technology centre is offering its extrusion technology knowledge and equipment to companies interested in developing new products or using by-products. Using technology centre facilities avoids stopping commercial production in factories and test new ingredients avoiding contamination issues. Partnerships sought are technical cooperation agreement or services agreement (food or pet food companies) and research cooperation agreement with any type of entity.

Description

Spanish horizontally integrated technology centre specialized in offering global solutions to companies. It provides them with its 20 years of experience in developments, processes, systems and products. It operates in five economic sectors: industry, energy and environment, construction and infrastructure, agrofood, health and quality of life.

Extrusion system has been used in food processing for over 50 years. Its combination of mixing and heating ingredients makes an easy production system. It is common to produce breakfast cereals, bread, snacks or pet food. This technology is used to improve nutritional and functional properties.

Spanish technology centre has broad experience optimising processes and formulations of breakfast cereals, snacks or fish food. Besides, it has developed formulations with high value-added ingredients or by-products of other food processes such as beer brewing waste, wine waste, mill waste or fruit and vegetables peels.

The technology centre offers its facilities and know-how to companies interested in:
- Developing new products: using new raw materials or by-products (from their own value-chain or others)
- Modifying flour or starch to obtain new functional proprieties.
- Improving a current product varying any ingredient, proportion or parameter.

Pilot scale facilities are available to produce small industrial production (minimum 30 kg).

Partners sought:
- For technical cooperation agreement or services agreement are companies, especially pet food industries or food industries: flour, cereals, snacks producers or breakfast cereals producers.
- The technology centre is also interested in research cooperation agreement with entities (companies, universities or research and technology centres) interested in developing a project about revalorisation of by-products or developing new products for future calls in Horizon2020.

Advantages and Innovations

Extrusion system is versatile to create new products from the same raw material slightly changing parameters. It produces homogeneous and finely structures. It is a process easy to scale-up

Using technology centre facilities avoids stopping commercial production in factories. Even more, if there is a new ingredient, important with allergic ones (e.g. soy), company can avoid contamination issues.

Technology centre’s extrusion pilot plant is equipped with:
- Twin-screw extrusion technology capable of productions of 25 kg/h. Highly flexible: the same processing line is able to process various types of raw materials and mix formulations, and to produce a wide range of end products.
- Hot air convection dryer.
- Mixer.
- Coating system.
- Different mill types.
- Laboratory: nutritional, physico-chemical and microbiological analysis. Complete characterization of modified material.
