Innovation & Technology Offer

Polymeric particles to reduce dentine hypersensitivity.

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20180713001
Publication Date: 17 July 2018

Summary

A Spanish start-up company specialising in the design and synthesis of smart materials mainly focused on the biotechnology, personal care and pharmaceutical markets, has developed a new material for potentially treating dentin hypersensitivity that is able to induce natural remineralisation of enamel in a few hours. The company is looking for partners specialized in dental care interested in financing for further development or licensing their patented technology.

Description

The company is a start-up company created in 2011 and located in a technology park in Southern Spain. The company is calling upon top-tier science in nanotechnology/(bio)chemistry and material science with robust Intellectual Property and proprietary know-how and is specialist in the design and synthesis of smart materials mainly focused to the biotechnology, personal care and pharmaceutical markets.

Dentin hypersensitivity, also termed dentin sensitivity or cervical sensitivity, is dental pain arising from exposed dentin surfaces in response to stimuli, typically thermal e.g. pain experienced in everyday activities like drinking a cooled drink. The main cause is gingival recession (receding gums) caused from excessive or forceful tooth brushing, or brushing with an abrasive toothpaste (dental abrasion). Dentin hypersensitivity is a relatively common condition and it is estimated to affect about 15% of the general population to some degree.

The Spanish start-up company has developed a new material based on Zinc functionalized polymer spherical particles (with size ranging between 200 nm and 250 nm) whose topical application is expected to reduce significantly dentin hypersensitivity.

These particles and their potential therapeutic applications are protected by a recent international patent application. The objective of the company is to complete the development of this agent in order to move to the market. To this end the start-up is preparing a development plan, including the regulatory studies.

The Spanish start-up company is looking for partners interested in patent licensing agreements but is also interested in partners specialized in dental care who can provide financial support in order to carry out further development in collaboration.

Advantages and Innovations

The main features and key benefits of the new material for potentially treating dentin hypersensitivity are:
• Highly bioactive and contribute to fast dentin remineralisation by enhancing the precipitation of natural minerals that are not dissolved by saliva.
• Occludes dentin tubules in a very efficient way.
• Increases dentin mechanical properties so that dentin will become resistant to subsequent abrasion.
• Possesses antibacterial activity.
• Inhibits dentin metalloproteinases, preventing the accelerated destruction of dentin.
• Low hardness: do not result in dentin or enamel abrasion.
• Fully occlude dentinal tubules enhancing surface nano-hardness.

Major expected advantages versus main competitor (Sensodyne GSK based on Novamin Technology) are the irreversible filling of dentine tubules and the lack of abrasion. More details could be provided under a confidential disclosure agreement (CDA).

Requested partner

The start-up is seeking Industrial partners from the dental/personal care markets to develop and commercialize the composition through a patent licence agreement.

The company is also open to companies specialized in dental care who can provide financial support in order to carry out further development in collaboration in order to move the agent to the market.
