Using artificial intelligence to shorten the time in the wind turbine design process

Country of Origin: Spain
Reference Number: TOES20181002001
Publication Date: 4 October 2018

Summary

An engineering research group from a Spanish university is currently working about the improvement of the design of wind turbines. By using artificial intelligence methods, several design tasks can be tackled in a much quicker way than by means of customary techniques, which allows saving a considerable amount of time along such a process. The research group looks for joint adventure agreements.

Description

Artificial intelligence has been widely applied to lots of design processes over the last few years, given its ability to tackle the behavior of many processes, starting from a set of examples produced by these ones.

Nowadays, the design process of wind energy production, storage and distribution systems make use of classical methods. The main objective over this process is considering as many different designs as possible, but this number is bounded by the amount of time required by such methods.

An engineering research group from a Spanish university aims to replace some of these classical methods by novel methods in artificial intelligence. Some of these techniques manage the available knowledge in a much more efficient way, providing in some cases even more accurate results. Artificial intelligence methods are able to save much time in the analysis of each proposed model, and thus, make possible to take into account a larger number of considered models throughout the design process.

The research group is looking for companies from the renewable sector who are interested in more efficient techniques to design wind turbines for joint adventure agreements to continue expanding and penetrate in new markets.

Advantages and Innovations

The main advantage of the soft computing algorithms in the design of complex systems is a hard reduction on the search space of the optimum parameters of the system.

Considering the large computing time of the simulation tools that process the parameters, the result is an important reduction of the cost/resources dedicated to the design task.
