Summary

A Greek company that offers software engineering services has developed an innovative system in order to control the voltage quality and power losses of the transmission/distribution grid. The company wishes to collaborate with power system integrators under commercial agreements with technical assistance so as to install the system and launch the technology abroad.

Description

A Greek SME specialized in designing and producing advanced electronics solutions is presenting a highly affordable and operational system for controlling the voltage quality and the power losses of the transmission/distribution grid. The method used for handling reactive power in transmission or distribution grids installs capacitor banks near the load and attaches or detaches them according to specific voltage/power criteria in order to obtain the optimum power factor. The system handles the capacitors automatically through dedicated controllers, sensors and intelligent algorithms. The solution offered is comprised of a variety of automation units, smart sensors and intelligent state-of-the-art software that all together provide the TSO (Transmission System Operator) or DSO (Distribution System Operator) with a wide range of benefits. Integration of renewables is also available.

The sub-systems of the offered solution include an intelligent reactive-load compensation controller. The controller is a low-cost automation solution which facilitates the compensation of reactive loads in power distribution substations. The unit uses intelligent control algorithms to react with up to three compensation elements (e.g capacitors, reactors). The unit provides all necessary input or output signals and a complete set of functionalities. The unit allows the attachment or detachment of the compensation elements to the grid. Multiple communication interfaces are available to enable the connection of the unit to the control center. Other additional units are available such as a smart sensor for extended measurements and smart sensors for the substation’s transformer status and on load tap changers (OLTC) position.

The system comes with the necessary software which enables the user to control effectively the substations and inform supervisors. A digital assistant provides complete data analytics, statistics, optimization tools, administration tools and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). Push notifications are sent, reports are generated and diagnostic date is provided.

The Greek company seeks power system integrators that cooperate with TSOs or DSOs in order to install the suggested solution under a commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Advantages and Innovations

The core of the system offered has already been installed in Greece, controlling the flow of 1,5 GW (peak 2 GW) in 150 power substations with remarkable benefits. The system achieves 8% average yearly power loss reduction which is equal to 1 million Euros of savings per 1GW-year (50€/MWhr). Also achieves 14% average yearly released capacity (in peak demand) which is equal to an amount of 60 million of Euros of imported energy.

The system manages to have success in all the modern challenges of a smart grid such as to conserve energy, release the capacity, react fast to distributed power generation unpredictability, to improve the quality of power product, maintain the effectiveness of the infrastructure and reduce the human surveillance.

Accompanied by the available software, the system is an affordable & effective solution for complete capacitor bank optimization in power substations.
