Innovation & Technology Offer

Full automatic pattern construction for the garment industry and other textile processing industries

Country of Origin: Hungary
Reference Number: TOHU20190613001
Publication Date: 13 June 2019

Summary

A small Hungarian family-owned SME specialized in garment production and IT solution development is offering a new construction method that is entirely different from the empiric methods used for garment pattern construction. It shortens the pattern design time by around two order of magnitude. The technology can be used for garment production and small scale customized or made-to-measure garment production. The company is looking for a joint venture partner to set up a new legal entity.

Description

A Hungarian family-owned SME is offering a new simple construction method for the garment industry. It is consistent, modularly organized and transferable to a wide range of garment types.

Outline of the problem addressed by this technology: The most critical part of garment production is pattern design. Due to the frequent changes in fashion and the ever-decreasing production volume, the design cost of a custom manufacturing pattern increases.

Nowadays advanced CAD based software programs are used for pattern design (construction). These applications use the traditional empiric construction methods where dozens of construction rules have to be observed by the operator. Although the design process is supported by advanced curve manipulating algorithms, pattern design is still tedious. The construction rules are not transferable from one kind of garment to the other. They even differ in case of the same kind of garment for various age-groups. Pattern makers have to observe dozens of rules during construction. Another shortcoming is that only professional skilled designers are able to use the complex software and must also be familiar with the intricate construction rules.

Widespread grading techniques are used to speed up pattern construction. Here starting from an existing pattern another pattern can be derived for a different size. This procedure is applicable with tolerable accuracy only for neighbouring standard sizes.

As opposed to CAD based pattern design the offered new technology uses new construction methods that are consistent, modularly organized and transferable to a wide range of garment types. In garment industry it is applicable particularly for customized production of uniforms or made-to-measure garments.

The technology can be used online selling of downloadable personalized patterns for hobby users worldwide. It can be used also for personalized, made-to-measure garments by eliminating ambiguity around sizing.

This technology is not limited to garment industry only. It is suitable for pattern construction of home textiles, tents, lorry canvas & tarpaulins, textile air-ducts etc. It can be used even for metal-sheet works.

In the joint venture setup creating a separate business is foreseen. The Hungarian SME will contribute with the technology itself whilst the prospective partner with capital and expertise. The Hungarian SME will take part in and control of the development of newer patterns. The new partner (investor) will have exclusive access to the patterns generated by both the already existing and the jointly developed procedures. The formal sale of the patterns to the investor, on an agreed upon piece rate, is the revenue of the joint company.

The joint company can develop and operate a webshop for online selling of downloadable custom-tailored patterns for end-users.

Advantages and Innovations

In spite of the massive support of sophisticated CAD vector-graphic software programs the construction is a tedious procedure that is prone to human error. A good command of computer skills and advanced pattern construction studies are required for a CAD pattern designer. When making patterns for a wide size-range an approximate construction method, the so called grading, is used.

• The offered new technology is simple. Operators only have to enter input data and start construction by pressing a button. The process is fully automatic.
• It is faster by around one hundred times. Pattern design takes only some seconds.
• It is cost efficient. Design cost is about 0.5 percent of design costs by CAD methods.
• It doesn’t require skilled staff for pattern construction. No human interaction is required.
• All input parameters and even the descriptive data of pattern drawings are stored in database. This ensures quick access to data.
• It is extendable. By the available developing tools and wide set of reusable curve creation algorithms more and more garment patterns can be generated.

Stage Of Development

Under development/lab tested

Stage Of Development Comment

The offered technology is capable to construct patterns of shirts, vests, caps, T-shirts etc. It is field tested on these garments.

Requested partner

Type of partner sought:
Innovative garment manufacturer which is open to novelties

Specific area of activity of the partner:
Preferable production of personalized, custom-tailored uniforms and made-to-measure garments. The partner should be dedicated to supporting further development of the project by its resources and expertise.

Task to be performed:
The partner company is to contribute with capital and expertise in a newly created joint venture company. The partner company could exploit the exclusive use of the already available patterns in its production.
The joint company will continue the development of newer patterns, and also to develop and operate an online shop for selling downloadable custom-tailored patterns for end-users.
