Innovation & Technology Offer

Innovative and sustainable process for the management of special and hazardous wastes based on supercritical water with the production of methane.

Country of Origin: Italy
Reference Number: TOIT20161118001
Publication Date: 21 November 2016

Summary

An Italian start up founded by a researcher group has developed a unique technology for the treatment of special and dangerous wastes (from hospitals, researcher laboratories and industries) with a process that it’s innovative, sustainable and safe for the environment thanks to supercritical water that cancel harmful emission.The technology is protected by 5 Italian patents internationally extended.The group is looking for financial or joint venture agreement or technical cooperation agreement.

Description

In the world scenario, there is an urgent need to find new waste management models that are able to guarantee efficiency and environmental sustainability. The continuous increase of waste at global level, their concentration in metropolitan area where is more difficult to install treatment plants, and the increase of costs sustained by citizens, are all plenty of scope challenges. Moreover, the increasingly rise of environmental sensibility of citizens requires models and technologies even more sustainable and cleaner.

The Italian innovative start up in the field of waste management has developed an innovative and unique technology that allows treating special and dangerous wastes, from one hand canceling noxious emissions in the air, and from other hand truly valorising them by producing methane. The emission of dioxins, fine particulate, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide, on the contrary, are one of the major drawbacks of incinerators. The process is based on the combined use of supercritical water. The technology is protected by five patents and the business idea is based on a plenty of scope of innovation technology, originality and on a «Km0» (zero kilometer) waste management model.
The history of the technology starts three years ago with the encounter of chemical engineering researcher of an Italian University with two entrepreneurs active in the field of renewable energy and an engineer specialized in business development. Their collaboration allowed putting to use the research activity carried out for more than 15 years in the field of supercritical fluids. The major steps that have been done towards the market are: completion of a wide experimental campaign, design of a pilot plant, construction of the pilot plant with capacity of 370 tons per year of treated waste (value of the plant 1 million euro), partnership with a relevant engineering group for the design of industrial scale capacity, development of industrial relationship with big companies, agreements with Hospitals, University departments and Municipality for the treatment of their waste).
The company is interested in establishing partnership with:
- industries, venture capitalists, funding bodies to involve in building plants based on the proposed technology to reduce the costs of waste management and emissions linked to waste treatment. In this case, a financial agreement or a joint venture agreement will be proposed;
- engineering society, process development experts to activate a collaboration for the co-development of large scale plant.
In this case, a technical cooperation agreement will be proposed.

Advantages and Innovations

Advantages:
- No emission of pollutants, such as dioxins, fine particulate, nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide.
- Capacity to treat special waste, even hazardous, without noxious emission.
- Possibility to install the plant nearby city center, applying the «Km0» (zero kilometer) waste management model.
- Production of methane as product with high added value.
- It’s a solution for isolated community and little islands.

Innovations:
- New reactor and plant concept;
- Process conditions that avoid the formation of pollutants.
- No risk for the population that lives nearby the plant.

Stage Of Development

Requested partner

With regard to financial agreement and joint venture agreement the proposer is interested in partnership with industries, venture capitalists, funding bodies to involve in building plants based on the proposed technology to reduce the costs of waste management and emissions linked to waste treatment.
With regard to technical cooperation agreement the proposer is also searching for engineering society, process development experts to activate a collaboration for the co-development of large scale plant.
In case an agreement will be concluded as consequence of patents also a licence agreement will be negotiated.
