Innovation & Technology Offer

A Korean R&D institute developed human body communication (HBC) technology and is looking for partners who could apply it to market products under a commercial agreement with technical assistance

Country of Origin: South Korea
Reference Number: TOKR20180627001
Publication Date: 27 June 2018

Summary

Human Body Communications (HBC) technology, which realizes data communication by using human body as a transmission medium, is a core technology of WBAN (Wireless Body Area Network). It provides intuitive service to users based on simple touch operation. As HBC's core technology and its feasibility have already been validated, the institution is ready to provide technical assistance for commercialization under a commercial agreement with technical assistance and several other types of agreement.

Description

Developed by a global ICT R&D institution established by the Korean government, human body communications technology (HBC) is a novel data communication method that uses a human body as a data transmission medium. This HBC technology is emerging as the next generation personal (individual) communication technology that can prevent the risk of information leaks in addition to the easy network configuration.

In order to use a human body as a transmission medium, channel characteristics, efficient transmission method, and network algorithm should be researched and developed to overcome various noises induced in the human body. And in addition to the development, implementation and evaluation of technology are another important issue for its commercialization. The Korean institute has finished HBC technology development, and it is ready to offer technical assistance for commercialization.

Future HBC technology would be applied to various business areas such as bio-diagnostics / healthcare / security / authentication services requiring high level security and long service time. The feasibility of HBC’s core technologies has been confirmed, and demonstration is available.

This Korean institute is looking for a partner who could apply and integrate the HBC technology to local commercial products. A potential partner is also responsible for local product licensing and all legal procedures for commercialization. Possible cooperation with this Korean institute would be a commercial agreement with technical assistance, license agreement or technical cooperation agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

The advantages and innovations of HBC technology can be defined as follows:

- High performance with low power consumption, high data rates over wireless method

- Achieved miniaturization by eliminating radio frequency(RF) modem using FSDT (Frequency Selective Digital Transmission) technology

- Easy to connect wearable / implantable devices to a host system by a simple touch

- Supports unconstrained multiple access to devices for WBAN via simple and intuitive contact

- Provides complete security services for payment and authentication as well as against wireless hacking

- IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.15.6 WBAN standards, the latest international standard for WBAN, is compatible with community standard

Stage Of Development

Available for demonstration

Stage Of Development Comment

The validity of HBC technology has been tested and prototypes for commercialization and field testing are underway.
