Innovation & Technology Offer

A Portuguese research group is offering their large-scale cyclic triaxial load testing system

Country of Origin: Portugal
Reference Number: TOPT20170726003
Publication Date: 26 July 2017

Summary

A Portuguese group specialised on the characterization of road, airport and railway materials, aggregates, bituminous binders, bituminous mixtures and materials treated with cement and non-traditional binders offers its large-scale triaxial device.

They are open to establish a research and technical cooperation agreement with the industry, universities or R&D institutions, seeking for expertise on characterization of bound and unbound granular materials for infrastructures layers.

Description

The Portuguese research group offers a triaxale apparatus which is a large-scale cyclic triaxial load testing system, comprising a pressure chamber, a loading system and an integrated control/acquisition/monitoring system, available with complementary configurations whose main characteristics are described below.
- Pressure chamber to contain cylindrical specimens with dimensions up to 200 mm diameter by 400 mm high, installed inside a controlled temperature room (-5ºC to 70ºC);- Servo-hydraulic loading device to apply confining pressures on the specimens up to 0.7 kPa (kilopascal) and cyclic axial loads up to 44 kN (kilonewton), with loading frequencies up to 50 Hz, depending on the axial load amplitude;
- A set of transducers installed outside and inside the chamber (local instrumentation) to measure forces, displacements, pressures, axial and radial deformations of the specimen, connected to a dedicated acquisition system;
- A user interface to control the servo-hydraulic device and monitor the tests and store the results.
The system can also be used for other type of tests, including unconfined compression tests, traditionally on bound and unbound granular materials, and 4-point bending tests on bituminous specimens.

The laboratory is open to cooperate with partners from industry, universities or other R&D institutions, seeking for knowledge and expertise on planned research, experimental development and innovation in his area of activity.

The group is searching for partners wishing to participate in a technology transfer process. For that purpose, their facilities are available to share with partners that may build on their expertise and scientific findings to develop new products and services.

They are looking for partners to establish a technical and/ or research cooperation agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

A great advantage of the cooperation with this laboratory is its potential for innovation due to the potential of the facility and the consistent quality of its staff skills.

It has been dedicated to different possible applications of bound and unbound granular materials, namely natural, artificial and recycled materials on base and sub-base layers of road pavements. Many experimental activities have been successful.

Numerous scour tests have been performed to analyse permanent deformation and resilient behaviour of different types of materials for different application on transport infrastructures
