Innovation & Technology Offer

Technology and equipment for energy-efficient production of ice, heat, and melt water

Country of Origin: Ukraine
Reference Number: TOUA20200731001
Publication Date: 21 August 2021

Summary

The Ukrainian company offers technology and an automatic installation for ice production (from frosty air, practically without additional energy), its accumulation and transportation to air conditioning, ventilation, food storage systems.
The company is looking for partners to implement this proposal on the basis of a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a technical cooperation agreement.

Description

The Ukrainian company, established in 1996, is engaged in the development of new technologies and infrastructure projects based on renewable energy sources using energy waste, saving resources, and materials. The company has qualified personnel and experience to solve technical problems of varying complexity. The company's employees have developed, manufactured, certified, and implemented more than 300 products.

The Ukrainian company has developed a technology and an automatic installation for the production of ice, heat, and melt water. The unit can be used in combination with heating systems using air source heat pumps (AHP), ventilation, air conditioning, and cooling systems.
This technology is significantly cheaper than the known ones and is accompanied by heating of frosty air, the formation of melt water, reduction of energy consumption, and CO2 emissions.

In the northern regions of Europe, Asia, and America, the number of frosty days ranges from 70 to 200 per year. At the same time, the efficiency of the AHP deteriorates due to a decrease in the transformation ratio (COP) from 3.5-5 to 1.5-2.0, and the operation of ventilation systems requires the use of additional sources of traditional energy.

It is also known that during the heating period (winter), air comes out of the AHP evaporator with a temperature of 25-40 ° C lower than the atmospheric temperature.

The heating of frosty air and the formation of ice (ice crumbs) in the installation occurs when the water freezes. In this case, the heat of crystallization is released, the value of which is so high (334 kJ / kg) that the water consumption is negligible.
This makes it possible in winter to heat up the air in front of the AHP evaporator and ventilation systems from minus 10-50 ° C to minus 3 ° C with the simultaneous production of a large amount of ice and meltwater.

The installation can be used in the following cases:
- in regions with a frosty climate - for heating of atmospheric air
in ventilation systems and before AHP evaporators in heating systems, in air conditioning systems, central cooling, for production, storage and transportation of ice (ice crumb), storage of food (fish) and production of melt water,
- in regions with temperate climates - for heating the air in ventilation systems and before AHP evaporators (during the heating season), in air conditioning systems, for the production and storage of ice (ice crumb), food storage, heat and melt water production,
- in regions with hot climates - ice crumb (after its transportation by sea isothermal containers at any distance in the amount of 20-400000 t and accumulation) is used in air conditioning, central cooling, ventilation, food storage and melt water production.

The installation is a completely separate automated unit (for supplying water and frosty air to special nozzles in order to form ice in the form of icicles), which does not violate the design of heating and ventilation systems, because it is located next to them.

The operation of the unit is of a periodic nature, associated with automatic ice removal (with a period of 8-24 hours). If continuous operation is required, several installations are used.

The organization is looking for partners working in the field of heat supply for industrial and municipal enterprises to participate in the joint design, production, and implementation of the proposed installations. The preferred form of cooperation is a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a technical cooperation agreement.

Advantages and Innovations

Currently, the world uses up to 70% of the generated electricity for cooling systems.
The proposed technology leads to:
- reduction of installed capacity and energy consumption in AHP and traditional heaters of ventilation systems,
- the possibility of more efficient work of AHP in cold weather,
- reduction of capital investments,
- saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
The use of the unit at frost temperatures of minus 20-50 ° C increases the COP AHP by 25-35%, saves energy for ventilation systems, and is especially beneficial for rooms with a high ventilation rate. With the simultaneous application of this technology in cold weather for AHP (in front of the evaporator) and for ventilation systems (in front of the heaters), up to 60% of energy can be saved.

Stage Of Development

Prototype available for demonstration

Stage Of Development Comment

Three types of air heaters were developed using the heat of crystallization of water, one of them was made as a pilot sample, with sufficient capacity for ventilation of the cottage. There were underwent tests near Kyiv in 2016. At the same time, the air was heated from minus 11ºС to minus 4-5ºС and its costs were sufficient for ventilation of the building with an area of 100 sq. m (the first degree of preheating in front of a traditional air heater).

Requested partner

Consulting, engineering companies, manufacturers of air-to-air, air-water heat pumps, ventilation equipment manufacturers - to participate in the design and implementation of the proposed installations.
