An artificial intelligence (AI) powered algorithm that predicts sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) from an electrocardiogram (ECG)

Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Reference Number: TOUK20190905001
Publication Date: 5 September 2019

Summary

A UK software company has developed an AI-powered algorithm that predicts sudden cardiac arrest minutes in advance with high accuracy. They are seeking corporate partners to create new or enhance existing ECG monitoring products, leveraging their AI. Type of co-operation sought: technical co-operation, license agreement.

Description

A UK-based medical software company applies artificial intelligence to patient data to produce new early warning products. They are seeking to develop an early-warning system for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The company is seeking corporate partners to create a new or enhance an existing medical-grade ECG monitoring product.

Previous work resulted in the development of a prototype algorithm that predicts SCA. This algorithm could serve as the basis for an early warning system that could alert clinicians of impending SCA and improve survival.

They have filed several patents and published peer-reviewed articles. Their algorithm’s sophistication surpasses approaches in academic literature. They used a combination of cardiac datasets from hospital telemetry, Holter monitors, and implantable cardioverter defibrillators across the US, Europe and Asia. Their algorithm would trigger an alert before an arrest so that clinicians receive an opportunity to either identify and treat reversible triggers of arrhythmia, or prepare to defibrillate if the patient develops an arrest. In addition, early warning could usher in an era of research into the use of anti-arrhythmic medicines to prevent SCA.

Ideally, partners would have medical-grade ECG monitoring products on the market. The algorithm will enhance existing products or support the creation of new ones. The type of co-operation would be technical co-operation and transfer of the algorithm under license.

Advantages and Innovations

No other technology warns patients ahead of an oncoming episode of sudden cardiac arrest. The technology does so with a real-time risk score that is highly performant on a time scale of minutes to an hour.
