Powerful 3D microstructure simulation suite made for analysing metallic materials behaviour

Country of Origin: Germany
Reference Number: TODE20180913001
Publication Date: 24 September 2018

Summary

A German university spin off offers a suite to simulate the microstructure of metallic material processes. It does not only provide common materials data such as stress-strain diagrams and composition maps without the need for extensive experiments, but it provides 3D data on all simulated quantities which can lead to new insights into materials development. Partnerships considered are on a technical cooperation and research cooperation basis.

Description

A German spin off company from a university has developed a suite to simulate the microstructure of all kinds of metallic material processes.

Based on an innovative multi-phase-field approach, the simulation suite has now matured into the most comprehensive microstructure simulation library available. It provides materials data such as stress-strain diagrams and composition maps without the need for extensive experiments as well as 3D data on all simulated quantities. The simulation suite can replace experiments up to a certain degree and help optimize processes through providing a better understanding of metallic materials behaviour. The intuitive graphical user-interface has a quick-start for various materials, guides through the creation of simulations and provides integrated documentation. In addition, two special modules complement the suite: the innovative diffusion module creates realistic simulations of diffusion and phase transformation, while the extensive mechanics module can test elasticity, crystal plasticity and finite strain of the material for virtually unlimited deformation.

New partnerships are sought in the form of technical cooperationn as well as research cooperation agreements. The spin off is looking for joint activities, primarily with partners from the metalworking industry and research institutes in materials. All kind of companies active in the processes of casting and forming, e.g. foundries and metal processing companies with their own R&D department or quality management, but also research institutes are considered. Cooperation projects could consist of testing the simulation software on different materials or applying the software to production and treatment processes.

Advantages and Innovations

The core of the simulation suite is its powerful library, integrated into an intuitive graphical user interface. At moment there is worldwide no solution with such a database. All kind of materials processes such as casting, tempering and mechanical testing can be simulated. The software does not only provide common materials data such as stress-strain diagrams and composition maps without the need for extensive experiments. It also provides 3D data on all simulated quantities and thus can help to optimize processes through better understanding of the materials’ behaviour.

The software can be obtained based on a yearly license fee for industry and academia alike. User support as well as training programs are part of the license agreement. Furthermore, the company offers custom solutions for individual problems on a project basis.

Requested partner

New partnerships are sought in the form of technical cooperation as well as research cooperation agreements. The start-up is looking for joint activities, primarily with partners from the metalworking industry. All kinds of companies active in the processes of casting and forming, e.g. foundries and metal processing companies with their own R&D department, but also research institutes are considered. The partner should be interested in gaining a deeper knowledge about the process of metal forming and to characterise failures in process.
