Scottish (UK) insects-as-feed company interested in taking part in H2020 Green Deal Farm-to-Fork Strategy Projects (LC-GD-6-1-2020)

Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Reference Number: TOUK20200918001
Publication Date: 18 September 2020

Summary

A Scottish (UK) SME working in the insect protein space proposes Farm2Fork Work Package related to the further development and distribution of high performance Black Soldier Fly genetics within the EU agri-food supply chain.

The SME seeks research cooperation agreements with other SMEs, corporates and Universities from the agri-food space that are leading an H2020 Green Deal project.

The SME is available to run or be involved with work packages relating to insect protein and genetics.

Description

The SME is based in Edinburgh, Scotland developing high performance Black Soldier Fly genetics for the insects as feed sector.

The company propose the further development of high-performance breeds of Black Soldier Fly for use within the EU "insects-as-feed" industry. It is their mission to maximise the productivity of the sector, enabling it to compete on price point with other feed ingredients.

The company is available to lead and develop a work package on insect genetics, and link this to a wider project that assesses how insects-as-feed, or the wider alternative protein space address the EU's farm to fork strategy. Expected end users will be Black Soldier Fly producers, along with key stakeholders in the agri-food chain who will utilise this solution within their supply chain.

The SME is able to execute on the work package themselves within their facilities in Edinburgh, and can engage with other insects as feed companies, and a leading animal genetics academic partner to deliver against project objectives.

The company is seeking to work with SMEs, large companies and Universities from the agri-food or insects-as-feed sector, with experience of having led and managed EU projects, and worked with delivering other innovation projects.

Advantages and Innovations

Insects design - Through the company's unique combination of biotech and advanced breeding they are creating a genetic library from which they selectively breed.

The company is well positioned to lead and develop a work package on insect genetics, and link this to a wider project that assesses how insects-as-feed, or the wider alternative protein space address the EU's farm to fork strategy. They have experience of winning EU projects having had a successful EIC Accelerator application last year.
